Dr. Finlay Malcom is a Consultant Cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre, specialising in Cardiac Electrophysiology, and holds executive roles in Medical Technology companies.
He recently founded Echopoint Medical Ltd, which is developing novel sensing technologies for invasive coronary physiology. He is also an inventor of STAR™ mapping, being commercialised to clinical reality by Rhythm-AI Ltd, and of Epicardio Ltd, real-time 4D cardiac simulation. He holds Honorary Senior Lecturer appointments at QMUL and UCL, where he develops minimally invasive technologies.
He qualified from Oxford University in Medicine in 2001, and gained his PhD in Cardiac Electrophysiology in 2014 from UCL, for which he held a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship, and was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist in 2014. He has published >40 papers in the field of cardiac arrhythmia, including recent works identifying the interplay between mental stress and propensity for abnormal heart rhythms. He continues to be actively involved in research in this area, particularly into the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation and the use of novel technologies in investigation and treatment. He is a member of the EHRA Scientific Initiatives Committee and EHRA Examination Committee.
Outside of cardiology, his interests include aviation, filmmaking (straight8.net) and sports. He holds an EASA PPL(A) pilots license which has strongly informed his focus of safety in the cardiac catheter lab, he is “lead” for Audit and Safety in the EP Catheter Labs at Barts.
Clinically, he performs catheter ablations for atrial fibrillation and other cardiac arrhythmias, and implant cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators.
