Prof. Dr. med. Wolfram-Hubertus Zimmermann Director Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology
I am a Professor and Director of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University Medical Center Göttingen. My research interests include: (1) development and translation of stem cell-based tissue engineered therapeutics; (2) development and translation of genome editing therapeutics, (3) human organoids and disease modelling for preclinical screens and evaluations of innovative drugs. To facilitate this research and its translational impact, we develop platform technologies for human stem cell propagation, differentiation, and maturation under biomimetic conditions. As the speaker of the Göttingen partner site of the German Center for Cardiovascular Research I support our mission to prevent heart failure and regenerate/repair the failing heart. These activities include the initiation of a first-in-class early clinical trial on tissue engineered heart repair (BioVAT-HF-DZHK20). As an infrastructural measure we have set-up a unique stem cell bank comprising >400 precisely annotated human induced pluripotent stem cell lines and together with our partners at the Göttingen Campus a translational pipeline from rodent to non-human primate models as well as state-of-the-art infrastructure for cardiac imaging and interventions. The research developments in my laboratory resulted in the spin out of several biotech companies, including myriamed GmbH and Repairon GmbH, with a focus on drug discovery and tissue engineered organ repair, respectively. My scientific track record includes >200 publications (H-index: 58) and 13 patents (7 granted).
