Alejandro Berenstein, MD, is a pioneer of modern Interventional and Surgical Neuroradiology. A Professor of Neurosurgery, Interventional Radiology, and Pediatrics at the Mount Sinai Health System, he founded multiple landmark clinical programs and currently directs the Vascular Malformations Research Center and the Hyman-Newman Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Dr. Berenstein helped establish the entire field of catheter-based neurovascular intervention, performing one of the world’s first therapeutic embolizations in 1974 and later creating the first comprehensive multidisciplinary center for treating head, neck, and peripheral vascular malformations. Over his career, he has authored more than 270 peer-reviewed papers, numerous book chapters, and the seminal five-volume textbook Surgical Neuroangiography. He has been instrumental in describing functional vascular anatomy, defining the natural history of major vascular lesions, and developing multiple devices now used globally.

Dr. Berenstein’s leadership and innovation have earned him more than 30 major national and international awards, including the Luessenhop Award, the Raimondi Award, and the Serbinenko Golden Sign Award. He also established the first U.S. fellowship in Surgical Neuroangiography, training specialists across radiology, neurosurgery, and neurology, and has delivered more than 600 invited lectures worldwide, including a TEDMED presentation. His influence spans clinical care, research, device innovation, and global education, and he continues to shape the future of neuroendovascular surgery.
